The Lonely Flight of Benny the Black Fly
Benny the Black Fly wasn't your typical fly. He was unique with his glossy wings and an eye for adventure. But Benny lived in a bustling city where no one really noticed the small creatures darting about. Day in and day out, he zipped through coffee shops, crowded parks, and the nooks of worn-out alleys that buzzed with life. But despite his tireless roaming, Benny was a loner. He’d watch as other flies paired up near open garbage lids, forming tight-knit communities.
He’d often reflect on how his dark complexion seemed to cast a shadow over his chances of finding companionship. The other flies teased him about being 'too dark,' their words floating away like the stale crumbs on a café table. Bitter jokes echoed in his tiny ears, and one day, feeling particularly dejected, he decided to explore a stretch of the city he'd never ventured to: a luxurious bakery that sparkled like a jewel under the afternoon sun.
With determination, he buzzed through the open window, drawn in by the scent of sweet pastries. For a moment, he forgot all about the loneliness and the jabs of the other flies. But as he darted through clouds of powdered sugar and warm butter, the pastry chef, wearing his tall hat like a crown, caught him mid-flight.
In a swift swoop, Benny found himself sent out of the bakery, back into the harsh reality of his existence. Alone again, he realized that the sweet taste of fleeting joy was often outweighed by the bitterness of rejection. So, Benny resumed his solitary flight through the city, feeling more like a shadow than before. Each day became indistinguishable from the last as he carried his burdens like a heavy weight buzzing through the air. And while he observed the world filled with laughter, he couldn’t help but wonder if anyone would ever see beyond his dark wings to the lively spirit hidden within. Little did he know that a young girl named Lily often lingered in the bakery just for a chance to see the world through the eyes of its smallest creatures. Unable to fly, she too felt the weight of loneliness and always wished someone, like Benny, would share the same air with her.
